About Our Founder
Pete A. Lang, president of Conservation by Design, has spent the past two decades acquiring, developing and managing residential, resort and mixed-use properties. He is considered an authority in designing low density subdivisions in a sustainable fashion and tying these communities with significant conservation programs. Lang’s success has been built around the rapid appreciation of his neighborhoods, which greatly outpace competing properties.
A graduate of The University of South Carolina and New York University, Lang began his career working as a corporate and tax lawyer in Washington, DC. After more than a decade of practicing law and representing developers, builders and other real estate interests, Lang made the jump to development in his home town of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
During his career, Lang worked in all aspects of real estate development, including launch marketing, financing and subdivision development. By 1999, he acquired more than 1,200 acres of oceanfront and intracoastal properties, which have spun off numerous successful subdivisions. Other projects focused on development of lakefront, riverfront and other water-oriented communities.
Lang has also been active in conservation in the Carolinas over the past decade. His efforts in the Fort Mill area include two conservation easements as well as the pledge of 1.5 miles of Sugar Creek frontage for walking trails as part of the Nation Ford Greenway. He was recognized as the 2002 Preservationist of the Year by the York County (SC) Chamber of Commerce.
